What we love

We have lived here for ten years.  Our animals and family (we helped raise our nieces and nephew who live a block away) mean the world to us.  We did everything we could to make this property and home safe, happy, welcoming, fun and healthy for them...a true labor of love. The ease with which our dogs, horses and chickens all lived together peacefully, and the ease with which we shared them with our visitors, made living at sunshine-infused 1 Syosset Lane especially joyful for us.  Visitors constantly commented on the sweet, happy energy of the place and animals.

We have owned a landscape design and construction firm for over twenty years, and are passionate not only about animals but also gardens and spending time outside.  In revamping the property at 1 Syosset Lane, it was important that the spaces and structures functioned exceptionally well in addition to being aesthetically pleasing.  The landscape we created here has been even more than we dreamed it would be. It has delighted us with stunning views throughout the seasons from both inside and outside the home, blooms (roses and many other cutting flowers!), stunning fall color, fragrance, privacy, and gracious spaces for us and our animals to thrive.  Our photo album shows snapshots of some of the joys of living at 1 Syosset Lane through the seasons.

We have had a constant stream of visitors since moving here.  Entertaining/dining indoors and out was a priority in making these spaces.  We love to cook, and created a kitchen where we could enjoy wonderful meals and views.  We love the easy access from the kitchen and living areas to the barbeque, firepit and hang out spaces, where the beautiful views are always changing, and horses can peer over the fence to say hi and join the party. We have grown a bounty of vegetables (especially great tomatoes!), and herbs, and one of our greatest pleasures was to collect our harvest at sunset as the animals looked on, perhaps waiting for a carrot or other treat from the garden.

We have had four very large sport horses here for ten years. We made the horse facility to be a place that was safe and peaceful for them, and have been very pleased with how they could flow through the spaces and have room to play, graze, rest, get out of the elements, and get to work happily and comfortably. The ability to ride out the door to miles of trails just down the road has been a privilege that we have appreciated immensely.  The all-weather arena offered the ability to exercise the horses through the year as well as a place for them, our dogs and even chickens to hang out in nice sandy irrigated footing. We made our driveway an easy drive-through for our truck with extra long two-horse trailer. We have appreciated the ease with which we would pop over to Mt. Burdell, Novato Horseman’s Club, or anywhere else.

We have loved that the close-knit immediate neighborhood is filled with horse people, mountain bikers, runners/walkers - some with kids, many with dogs and other farm animals - and is very friendly.  We feel most fortunate to have lived in Indian Valley, this quiet corner of Marin. While just a short bike ride from Whole Foods, great restaurants, shops, etc. we’ve experienced the serenity, slower pace, lush beauty and solitude of “Old California”.  This is the only place we have found in the Bay Area where we can feel a sense of what California used to be while being able to easily get to the coast, Sonoma, Napa and San Francisco, the East Bay and the Peninsula.

We hope you will love living here as much as we have.

Site/Floor Plan

Located in the rolling hills and valleys of northern Marin County, Novato is the second-largest community in the county. Formerly known as a gateway to the Wine Country, Novato is increasingly being discovered as a destination in its own right. The reasons: great weather, a lively downtown, and homes that provide the best value in Marin.
Upscale housing includes the luxury homes of Black Point, waterfront living on the lagoons of Bel Marin Keys, the wooded Alameda Del Prado, and Indian Valley Road and its horse-country estates.
Big-box shopping is concentrated in the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, which houses a Costco, a Target, and a Macy's Furniture, among other businesses. Downtown, a beautification program has brought new life to the businesses along Grant Avenue. The downtown area is alive with a Tuesday evening farmers market, outdoor movies, parades, and art and wine festivals.
In the '90s, military base Hamilton Field was converted to new housing and a business park. The former hangars now house cutting-edge biotech companies, digital development companies, the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, and more than 40 art studios. Novato is also headquarters of large insurance company Fireman's Fund, as well as the Buck Institute, a research organization that focuses solely on aging.
